The Public Accounts Committee has been hearing from FÁS representatives in relation to it's financial statements.

They have outlined how the agency spent money over the past number of years, particularly in the area of leasehold properties.

One of the issues raised was the decision by the Government in 2004 to decentralise the FÁS head office to Birr, Co Offaly.

An office was acquired in 2007 with a 10 year lease at a cost of €100,000 a year. Just over €1m was spent to fit that particular office out.

The intention according to the Director General of FÁS Paul O'Toole, was that up to 400 staff would decentralise to Birr.

To facilitate that move a greenfield site was purchased for €1.5m.

Mr O'Toole confirmed that the site is still an asset of FÁS, and is currently for sale for €150,000.
