Up to 250 children and their families from across the country are gathering in Croke Park in Dublin today to mark ten years of kidney transplantation at Temple Street Children's University Hospital.
Of the 80 children who have received a transplant at the hospital since 2003, 22 obtained a kidney from a living donor such as a parent or close relative.
Over the ten years, the youngest recipient of a new kidney was aged two and the oldest was 17.
Dr Atif Awan, consultant nephrologist at the National Paediatric Renal Transplant and Haemodialysis Unit at Temple Street Hospital, said today's event is a way to thank the families of donors.
He said more kidney donors are always needed.
