Pickets have been placed on the offices of Kells Credit Union in Co Meath in a one-day stoppage over a union recognition dispute.

Six members of staff joined SIPTU and sought to have the union recognised by local management.

However, SIPTU claims the credit union has refused to meet them and is also refusing to implement a Labour Court recommendation that said the union should be recognised.

Yesterday's action was a one-day stoppage, but further action is expected.

A spokesperson for Kells Credit Union said the claim that it does not recognise the right of workers to join a union is incorrect.

In a statement, the Credit Union said it has always recognised the right of its staff to join a trade union, as evident from its own employee handbook.

it said that SIPTU has "complained that Kells Credit Union has declined to recognise SIPTU for collective bargaining purposes.

"This is distinct from and different to the claim by SIPTU that there is a refusal to recognise the right of a worker to join a trade union."

The Credit Union said it regretted any inconvenience caused to its members by today's action.
