A Bill that provides for micro chipping of all dogs by 2015 has passed through the Oireachtas.

The Animal Health and Welfare Bill will force all dog owners to have their dogs chipped, making the animals readily identifiable if welfare issues arise.

The Bill also outlaws attending and recording dog fights, and the practice of docking or cutting dogs' tails for cosmetic reasons.

New powers to tackle the illegal trafficking of animals are also included, as are duties on owners of all animals to provide for their proper care.

The Bill passed the final stage in the Seanad this afternoon and will now go to President Michael D Higgins to be signed into law.
