President Michael D Higgins is expected to visit Britain's Queen Elizabeth II next year.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny confirmed to the Dáil that the proposal of a return visit by President Higgins, following Queen Elizabeth's visit to Ireland in 2011, is "under active consideration".

While a date has not been arranged, Mr Kenny said it is expected that the visit would take place in 2014.

Meanwhile, the President is to visit Croatia next month.

The trip, from 5 June to 9 June, was formally approved by Cabinet today.

President Higgins will be accompanied by Minister for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton.
