US President Barack Obama will visit Belfast ahead of next month's G8 summit in Co Fermanagh.

The White House has confirmed that Mr Obama will begin his trip in Belfast on 17 June.

In a statement, the White House press secretary said Mr Obama will "engage with the people of Northern Ireland and highlight the hard work, dialogue, and institutional development they have undertaken together".

Following the G8 summit at Lough Erne, the president will travel to Berlin, Germany. 

The White House said Mr Obama will reinforce the importance of transatlantic ties and discuss the global economy.

The travel arrangements of First Lady Michelle Obama have yet to be announced.
