Pope Francis has appointed a Meath parish priest as the new Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin.

Fr Denis Nulty, 50, is currently assigned to St Mary’s Parish, Drogheda in the diocese of Meath.

Fr Nulty, who has an MA in Management for Pastoral and Voluntary Services, was ordained in 1988 and appointed as St Mary’s parish priest in 1998.

He graduated from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth with a BA in 1984 and achieved a BD in 1987.

The youngest of five children, Fr Nulty was born in Slane in 1963.

In September 2006, he was appointed as Vicar Forane for the Duleek Deanery, which comprises seven parishes.

He has also been chairperson of the Council of Priests in the Meath diocese for the past eight years.

The Diocese of Bishop and Leighlin is made up of Co Carlow and parts of counties Kildare, Offaly, Kilkenny and Wexford, with a total of 56 parishes.
