An inquest has been held into the death of a man whose body was found washed up near Dunfanaghy, Co Donegal, 30 years ago but unidentified until now.
In June 1983 the body of a man, believed at the time to be aged between 40 and 50, was recovered from the sea and buried later in the local cemetery.
DNA analysis of tissue retained from the post mortem examination on the body recently proved that the body was that of 26-year-old Noel McGlynn of Mountain Top, Letterkenny.
The DNA was matched with a sample from James McGlynn, who believed that the unidentified man was his brother.
Noel McGlynn was suffering from depression when he went missing in June 1983.
Following the discovery of the body near Dunfanaghy, a doctor who had been treating him went to the morgue but did not identify the body as Mr McGlynn's.
Evidence was given at today's inquest that the body was decomposing at the time and may have been in the water for one to two weeks.
There was no evidence of a violent death. A verdict of death due to drowning was returned.
