In Derry city up to 200 people gathered at Free Derry Corner tonight and burned a photograph of Margaret Thatcher, on cardboard in the shape of a coffin lid.

Portions of cake were distributed and some of those at the demonstration carried the Tricolour flag and the national flags of Argentina and Chile.

Throughout the day large numbers of PSNI officers were visible on the city streets.

The PSNI helicopter tracked the movements of the demonstrators this evening as they converged on the Bogside.

There have been no reports of disturbances.

The gathering in the Bogside is taking place close to the home of Northern Ireland's deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness.

Mr McGuinness had urged people to not participate in parties linked to the death of the former British prime minister.
