The President of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has resigned.

Willie Gleeson, a Cork-based sergeant, has also resigned as chairman of the association's national executive.

Both Mr Gleeson and the AGSI's general secretary, John Redmond, are involved in a legal dispute with the Irish Mail on Sunday about a recent article they described as "false and insensitive".

Mr Gleeson said he had resigned both of his positions because of the article.
