Irish-language history was made last night when an astronaut in space sent a message to planet Earth 'as gaeilge'.
The comments were made on Twitter by a commander who is aboard the International Space Station.
Chris Hadfield’s half a million Twitter followers have been enthralled by his eye-catching pictures of Earth, taken from the space station.
Last night, the astronaut sent the following message: Tá Éire fiorálainn! Land of green hills and dark beer. With capital Dublin glowing in the Irish night.
Moments later, he tweeted again to thank people for their compliments about his cupla focal: Wow, I can feel the warmth of the Irish all the way up here – go raibh maith agaibh! I’ll do my best to photo more cities as clouds clear.
