A Dublin GP says he has secured the 120 signatures needed to have an extraordinary general meeting of the Irish Medical Organisation within 21 days.

South Dublin GP Dr Cathal O'Suilliobhain said he delivered the documents to the IMO this afternoon.

It follows the controversy over news in December of the planned retirement of the organisation's chief executive George McNeice, with a package worth around €9.7m.

The EGM is being sought to deal with four motions.

One motion calls for an interim CEO to be appointed immediately, who has no previous connection with the organisation.

A second calls for an external independent review of the financial and management activities in the IMO over the last 12 years.

The other motions seek minutes of all council, management committee and sub-committee meetings for the last 12 years and the appointment of a seven-person committee of members to oversee the external independent review.
