The last broadsheet edition of the Irish Independent has been published.
Only the compact or tabloid format will be available from tomorrow.
The paper introduced the smaller version in 2004.
Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Irish Independent Editor Stephen Rae said today was "historic", but added that most of its readers already buy the compact version.
"80% of our readers and subscribers are compact-only people. We've done a lot of research and it wasn't a easy decision to make, but it was a decision we had to make because people told us they really wanted the compact version of the paper," he said.
"And even broadsheet readers who drifted into the compact found that they liked it as well."
Mr Rae said since he became editor in September, the content in the compact edition had increased by 15%.
However, he accepted that the broadsheet edition will be missed.
"We've had a couple of readers on saying that they'll miss the broadsheet, but they're certainly going to experiment with the compact and see what its like.
"Overwhelmingly the reaction has been very positive," Mr Rae said.
Mr Rae did not rule out that the newspaper may decide to move exclusively online in the future.
