The recent planning permission granted by Longford Town Council for the restoration of St Mel's Cathedral in Longford has been appealed by a third party.

The cathedral was extensively damaged in a fire on Christmas Day in 2009.

A comprehensive restoration project has been put in place and phase one works have already commenced.

The planning permission that has been appealed is in relation to the interior of the cathedral.

This includes the fitting of windows, cleaning of external stonework and associated works.
