Over 2,000 people have taken part in an anti-abortion march in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

The march’s organisers, Youth Defence, said the rally had been organised in the Taoiseach Enda Kenny's home town to remind Fine Gael that it had promised not to legislate for abortion.

The organisers said there was no appetite among Irish people for abortion legislation and there was no medical need for abortions to be performed in hospitals.

Earlier this year the Government asked an expert group to consider the implications of a 2010 European Court of Human Rights ruling, which said Ireland had failed to properly implement a Constitutional right to abortion where a woman's life is at risk.
