Labour urged to end austerity policies

The Campaign for Labour Policies has called on the Labour Party to renegotiate the Programme for Government and to end austerity policies.

At a press conference today outlining its Budget submissions, the group, which claims to have support from about 100 grassroots members of the Labour Party, is demanding that the Government initiate a jobs stimulus programme of €2bn in the Budget.

It proposes changes to the taxation system, including a range of measures to tax higher income groups.

Measures proposed include a wealth tax and an effective income tax increase for those earning over €100,000.

The group says that this would free up funds for job creation and to promote equality and a real welfare state.

It has called on members to support a march organised by trade union groups on 24 November to end austerity.
