Dental records may link remains to Fermoy businessman missing for 22 years

Gardaí investigating the disappearance of a Fermoy businessman 22 years ago are hoping dental records will be able to confirm the identity of human remains found in the River Blackwater.

They believe the remains are likely to be that of 54-year-old William "Bill" Fennessy.

Mr Fennessy was a local publican, auctioneer and former Labour County Councillor, who went missing on 30 March 1990.

The chance discovery of the submerged Daihatsu Charade car was made by the Blackwater Sub Aqua Search and Rescue Unit during a routine exercise on Monday.

Repeated dives were made yesterday at the site 300 metres west of the town's bridge during which some human remains were recovered.

These will be examined later today by the Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

Superintendent Michael Comyns, who is overseeing the investigation, said it is hoped dental records will aid identification and DNA testing is also to be carried out.

Foul play is not suspected.
