Six people have died in road crashes in a 24-hour period in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Cavan.

A 21-year-old man died after the car in which he was a passenger left the road and crashed into a tree at Hartstown Road, Hartstown, in Dublin, in the early hours of this morning.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown with serious injuries but later died.

Elsewhere, a man in his 50s died in Co Cavan after the tractor he was driving overturned on the Cootehill to Mountain Lodge road shortly before 8pm last night.

Yesterday afternoon, a man in his 30s died after the motorbike he was riding collided with a car near Dripsey, 20km west of Cork city.

Two young children died in a crash in Co Galway yesterday. They have been named locally as two-year-old Kate Gilmore and her two-month-old sister Grace.

The children were with their father on the outskirts of Tuam when they were hit by a car yesterday afternoon.

Their father and the driver of the car were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
