FAI confirms Giovanni Trapattoni will remain as Irish boss

The FAI has confirmed that Giovanni Trapattoni will stay on as Republic of Ireland soccer manager.

The Board of Management met tonight in Abbotstown in Dublin where it was decided that the Italian would continue in his role.

Last night's 4-1 win against the Faroe Islands seems to have turned the decision in Trapattoni's favour.

In the statement, the FAI says it believes qualification for Brazil 2014 is still a realistic and achievable prospect.

There had been strong speculation in the past few days that he would exit the position after a run of poor results, including a 6-1 defeat to Germany at the weekend.

In a statement by the organisation this evening, the FAI said it was "disappointed... with the poor result and performance against Germany and understood the frustration of some of our supporters.

"The Board recognises the depth of feeling surrounding the team, the performances, the results and the manager, reflecting the passion which everyone in Irish football has for the game and will continue to work closely with the manager."
