A proposal to ban the advertising of cheese during children's television programmes has been dropped.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland says the new advertising model, which will determine if food or drink is high in fat, salt or sugar, will not now apply to cheese.

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte welcomed what he called a "common sense decision".

Advertising for products such as potato crisps, most breakfast cereals, biscuits and cakes, confectionery, French fries, most pizzas, carbonated sweetened drinks and most sausages and burgers will not be allowed.
