Dublin City Council rules on Bewley's sign removal

Dublin City Council has ruled that the removal of part of the signage from the former Bewley’s cafe on Westmoreland Street will need planning permission.

The removal of the name "Bewleys" from the mosaic facade and floor tiling will need planning consent, however the removal of the name "Bewleys" in stained glass above the door would not.

The former cafe is now a Starbucks and the application regarding the signage was made by Bewley’s Oriental Cafes Ltd.

A company spokesman said the mosaic tiling dates to the late 1970s and the stained glass to the 1990s, contrary to some media reports that the features were almost 120 years old.
