Farmers to receive advance EU payments

Farmers are to receive advance EU payments totalling over €500m from next week.

The money is coming six weeks early to help farmers with cash flow after the wet summer weather.

The rollout of the annual Single Farm Payment will start on Tuesday.

Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney said the EU had approved the early payment following his requests.

Around 105,000 cases have been cleared for payment in the first run.

The advance payments will continue to be issued up until 30 November, with balancing payments starting from 1 December.

Mr Coveney noted that these payments follow those under the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme, which began issuing payments three weeks ago.

Around €167m has already been paid out under DAS to 76,000 farmers.
