US airline United is to operate transatlantic flights from Shannon to Chicago five days a week next summer.

The airline will fly the route for three months beginning in June.

Minister for Transport & Tourism Leo Varadkar says it is a significant vote of confidence in Shannon by United.

He also said it is a major boost for the tourism industry, as it provides direct access to a new destination in North America and access to connections for 125 other destinations across North and South America and the Caribbean.
