Oireachtas members claimed €750,000 in expenses during recess

TDs and Senators received over €750,000 in expenses and allowances in August, when the Oireachtas and its committees were not sitting.

26 deputies received over €5,000 each in allowances for August, with the highest individual monthly payment of almost €5,300 going to Fine Gael TD for Cork South-West, Noel Harrington.

Only two of the 226 Oireachtas members - Independent Senator John Crown and Labour TD Eamon Maloney - received no payments.

The Parliamentary Standards Allowance scheme covers payments for travel and accommodation as well as a public representation allowance.

Depending on how far away an Oireachtas member lives, the annual allowance ranges from €12,000 to €37,850 and is paid monthly.

An Oireachtas spokesperson said that as the allowance covers expenses for constituency activities and parliamentary offices.

They said that expenses can be incurred legitimately even when the Oireachtas is in recess.

Any unused allowances must also be refunded to the exchequer at the end of the year.

According to attendance records published today, TDs and Senators signed in at Leinster House for a total of 547 days in August - an average of around two and a half days each.

If the records are correct, 38 TDs did not attend during the month.
