Jill Meagher's funeral to take place on Friday in Melbourne

The funeral of Jill Meagher is to take place this Friday in Melbourne, her family has announced.

There will be a private service at 10.30am local time (1.30am Irish time) after which her remains will be cremated.

Her ashes will then be brought by her parents to their home in Perth, Western Australia.

The Drogheda-born woman disappeared in the early hours of Saturday 22 September after a night out with work colleagues in the suburb of Brunswick.

Her body was discovered in a shallow grave at the side of a dirt road about 50km northwest of Melbourne on Thursday.

A 41-year-old man has been charged with her murder and rape.

It is expected a public memorial service will be held in Drogheda on the same day as Mrs Meagher's funeral.

Drogheda Borough Council has also opened a book of condolence in the town in memory of the 29-year-old.

Separately, Facebook is reported to have refused a request by Australian police to take down a page which features prejudicial comments about the man accused of Mrs Meagher’s murder.

Her husband Tom Meagher had last week urged people to show restraint when commenting on social networks as their comments could impact the trial.
