The Army bomb disposal squad has dealt with a quantity of unstable chemical, which was found during renovations of a school laboratory in Co Cavan.

The team was called by gardaí to make safe a quantity of unstable Dinitrophenylhydrazine yesterday evening in St Patrick's College.

They arrived at 6.45pm and the chemical was removed to another location where it was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 8pm.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country that can become unstable over time.
