Public Accounts Committee chairperson John McGuinness has said he aims to have some public sector allowances cut before December’s Budget.

He said he intends to speed up the committee's hearings into the allowances.

Mr McGuinness said that he expects the findings will persuade the Coalition to cut such payments.

The Government last week decided to leave existing public sector allowances largely untouched.

Speaking on RTÉ's The Week in Politics, IMPACT's Deputy General Secretary Shay Cody expressed surprise that the Government did not cut deeper.
