President hosts reception for Olympic team

President Michael D Higgins has hosted a reception at Áras an Uachtaráin this afternoon to honour the Irish Olympic Team.

The President and his wife, Sabina, met each of the athletes individually, along with their coaches and invited guests.

There were 30 of the 66 Irish athletes present.

Gold medal-winning boxer Katie Taylor attended, along with bronze medallists Paddy Barnes and Cian O'Connor.

Silver medal winner John Joe Nevin and bronze medal winner Michael Conlon were unable to attend, as they are both currently abroad.

Also greeted by President Higgins were President of the Olympic Council of Ireland Pat Hickey and the team's Chef de Mission Sonia O'Sullivan.

The games produced five medals for the Ireland - one gold, one silver and three bronze - equalling the record medal count of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
