No major financial crisis at Bord na Móna, says chairman-designate John Horgan

Chairman-designate of Bord na Móna John Horgan has said there is no major financial crisis at the company.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr Horgan said the crisis relates only to the poor peat harvest this summer.

He added that only about 40% of the targeted peat harvest will be made this season.

But Mr Horgan said an agreement has been reached with the ESB and Bord na Móna will supply them with their contracted volumes this year.

Mr Horgan also expressed his full confidence in chief executive Gabriel D'Arcy.

An Oireachtas Committee heard yesterday that unions at Bord na Móna have circulated a motion of no confidence in the chief executive.

Mr Horgan said it is unclear whether this motion has been brought to the company yet.

Mr Horgan said he has assessed the performance of Mr D'Arcy and said the facts show he has done a "magnificent job".

On seasonal workers, Mr Horgan said he hoped the same number, if not more, would be back working with Bord na Móna next summer.
