Northern Ireland to ban cheap alcohol promotions

Cheap alcohol promotions are to be banned in pubs, bars and clubs in Northern Ireland from next year.

The Stormont Department of Social Development said promotions offering unlimited amounts of alcohol for a fixed price, such as "all-you can drink for £20", will be banned when the new law comes into force in January 2013.

The ban follows a series of consultations that revealed the public supported the move.

The restrictions will not apply to off-licences, supermarkets or other retailers selling bulk purchases of alcohol.

This proposal was also strongly supported in public consultation, but Minister for Social Development Nelson McCausland decided not to change the law in this regard.
