NI assembly calls for Govt apology over IRA

Members of the Stormont Assembly have passed a motion calling on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to apologise for the role allegedly played by past Irish administrations in creation of the IRA.

The motion was carried by a one-vote margin, 47 votes to 46.

During the debate the DUP Assembly member Gregory Campbell claimed that at the beginning of The Troubles a Fianna Fail government had helped to arm the IRA and had acted as midwife at the birth of a monster.

Arlene Foster, Minister for Enterprise in the power-sharing administration and a Fermanagh-based Assembly member said the Irish authorities had not done enough to stop what was a policy of genocide carried out against Protestants in border counties.
