US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has given a downbeat assessment of prospects for reaching agreement with Russia on how to handle the Syria crisis, saying her talks with Russian leaders had made little progress.
"We have to be realistic. We haven’t seen eye-to-eye on Syria. That may continue," Ms Clinton told reporters.
She was speaking after talks with President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a summit of Pacific countries.
Ms Clinton said that despite the lack of agreement with Russia, the US would continue to work with like-minded countries to support the Syrian opposition in its struggle against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Meanwhile, Syrian activists say about 100 people have been killed in fighting in the last 24 hours, most of them in the two main cities of Damascus and Aleppo.
The activists say government air-strikes have also destroyed a main pipeline supplying water to the city of Aleppo during intense bombardment, leaving several parts of the city without drinking water.
