Joan Burton says older people need not be 'enormously worried' about cuts to free travel scheme

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has moved to allay concerns that some older people may have about the free travel scheme.

Speaking in Dublin earlier today, Minister Burton said older people should not be "enormously worried".

She said that the Government places a very high value on the free transport scheme.

It emerged earlier this week that a Government working group is reviewing the scheme.

Ms Burton said that there are issues with transport operators, and the matter is currently being discussed by Government.

Fianna Fáil social protection spokesperson Willie O’Dea called on Ms Burton to rule out any cuts to the scheme.

He said: "It is very disappointing that she stopped short of ruling out any cut to this much valued scheme. She must immediately do so."
