There was an increase of almost 18% in first-time callers to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre last year.
According to its annual report for 2011, over 9,000 genuine calls were received. Almost 4,000 of those were from first-time callers, an increase of almost 18% on 2010.
Just over half (52%) of calls related to adult sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment and trafficking.
The report said 81% of callers were women and 19% were men.
