David Charlton, the husband of former Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, has died.

Mr Charlton, 48, was from Kiltimagh in Co Mayo and had been suffering with cancer. He died at home tonight in Frosses in Co Donegal.

He was a garda based in Glenties in Co Donegal. The couple have a son and a daughter.

They met when Mr Charlton was on duty at Leinster House.

Mr Charlton lost a leg in a serious car crash a few years after they married.
