The actress Maureen Toal has died at the age of 82.

Best known for her role as Teasey McDaid in RTÉ's long-running series Glenroe, Ms Toal also had a long and distinguished theatre career dating back to when she first joined the Abbey Theatre in 1946.

Ms Toal, who was born in 1930 and was from Fairview in North Dublin, received an honorary doctorate from UCD in 2010.

She died peacefully in her home in Sandycove last night.

She is survived by her son, three grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
