An elderly woman has unintentionally destroyed a valuable piece of artwork after she decided to restore the painting herself.

The painting was a 19th century Spanish fresco titled Ecce Homo by artist Elias Garcia Martinez.

It was donated to the Centro de Estudios Borjanos in Borja, Spain, by the artist's granddaughter.

The centre holds an extensive archive of regional religious paintings.

Cecilia Gimenez, who is in her 80s, lives close to the centre.

She thought she would save the centre both time and money by restoring the painting herself.

Ms Gimenez said she had permission of the parish priest to undertake the project and denied she did it secretly.

She said: "We have always repaired everything here. Everybody who entered the church could see me as I was painting."

Professional art restorers are to meet in the coming weeks to discuss how to repair the damaged fresco.
