Prostitution support group sees 18% increase in cases in 2011

The support group for women affected by prostitution and trafficking in Ireland has said demand for its services increased by 18% last year.

In its annual report for 2011, Ruhama said it assisted 200 women from 36 countries and dealt with 91 cases of suspected sex trafficking.

Chief Executive Sarah Benson said: "The changing methods of control used by traffickers are making it more difficult for authorities to identify the hard edge of trafficking."

She said the fact that most victims are forced to make their own escape from traffickers has resulted in a low number of victims receiving assistance.
