Fianna Fáil's Éamon Ó Cuív has called on the Department of Agriculture to set-up a helpline for farmers, who are in distress due to the poor weather conditions this summer.

Mr Ó Cuív said he is being frequently contacted about the effect the terrible summer is having on farmers' mental health and the need for emergency action and support.

He accused Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney of doing nothing while there is "devastation" out there.

Mr Ó Cuív said officials from the department and Teagasc need to adapt to the huge problems facing farmers and to act accordingly.
