An injured crewman on a French trawler was taken to hospital this morning after being winched on board the Shannon based coastguard helicopter off the southwest coast.

The man suffered severe head injuries and was flown directly to Cork University Hospital for treatment at 2.50am.

The trawler was located about 240km off the Beara Peninsula in west Cork when the alert was raised just after midnight.

The operation was coordinated by Valentia Coastguard.
