Gardaí and fire services remain at the scene of a fire at an oil depot in Co Kilkenny this evening.

The blaze was reported shortly before midday near Mullinavat on the Kilmacow to Waterford Road.

The road is closed and local diversions in place.

Motorists travelling southbound can join the M9 Dublin to Wareford Road at Junciton 11 Mullinavat.

Gardaí say although the blaze is visible from the motorway between Junctions 9 and 10, the motorway itself is not affected.

They are asking motorists to continue to maintain safe progress, and not to slow down or stop suddenly, as this could cause a potential hazard.

Irish Rail services are only running between Heuston Station and Kilkenny until tomorrow morning, because of the proximity of the fire to the rail line past that point.

Bus transfers are in operation between Kilkenny and Waterford.

Jane Cregan, spokesperson for Irish Rail, said it will be tomorrow before full services resume.
