The N5 bypass of Longford town will open to traffic later this morning.

The new route is expected to cut up to 20 minutes off the journey from Dublin to Mayo.

The road will remove 5,000 vehicles per day from Longford town.

Air quality and road safety will also be improved as a result of the removal of traffic.

Liaison Engineer with Longford County Council Paul Newell has said the new road will significantly ease traffic congestion for motorists.
