An estate in Co Carlow with 63 unfinished houses has sold at auction for €640,000.

The 14-acre Glendale Estate development outside Tullow also has planning permission for a further 58 sites.

The estate, which is next to a nursing home, was initially built as a retirement village by Glendale Estates Ltd.

But since the developers went into receivership, restrictions have been lifted and the properties can be rented or sold to anyone.

DNG McCormack Properties, the joint agents for the sale, had put a guide price of €150,000 for the entire site, but the selling price was over four times that figure.

One of the houses could have been expected to fetch around €200,000 during the boom.

Today's sale saw each house make just over €10,000.

Marcus McCormack of DNG McCormack Properties said there were six bidders at today's public auction, held in Dublin, with over 25 interested parties in the room.

It was purchased by a solicitor in trust on behalf of an anonymous buyer.

The 63 houses are practically finished but all need to be fitted with kitchens, and ground work needs to be completed on the estate.

Mr McCormack said it was "great to have it sold" and described it as a "vote of confidence in the market".
