Majority believe alcohol consumption in Ireland is too high

85% of people believe levels of alcohol consumption in Ireland are too high, a new survey on public attitudes has found.

It also found that 58% believe the Government is not doing enough to reduce our alcohol intake.

The survey of 1,020 adults was carried out by Ipsos MRBI for the publicly-funded Health Research Board, which aims to improve people's health through research and public policy initiatives.

98% of people said they would like to see alcoholic strength displayed on drink containers.

It says that 95% would like to see details of alcohol related harms displayed.

A ban on alcohol industry sponsoring of sporting events was supported by 42%, while 37% supported a ban on the alcohol industry sponsoring musical events.

On pricing, 58% were found to support a minimum price for alcohol, and 75% say they purchase alcohol in supermarkets.

Of these 67% said it would take a price increase of 25% before they would reduce the amount they purchase.

The survey also suggests that people who buy alcohol in supermarkets respond strongly to special promotions or price reductions for alcohol.

65% of people under 24 years of age say they buy more in response to promotions.
