A 27-year-old man was hired and paid to kill another man in Dublin two years ago, the Central Criminal Court was told at the opening of a murder trial today.
Jonathan Douglas from O'Devaney Gardens in Dublin has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Aidan Byrne in Dublin on 20 February 2010.
Mr Byrne, 31, was shot ten times as he sat in a car at Drumalee Avenue off the North Circular Road.
Senior Counsel Gerard Clarke said Mr Byrne was driven to Drumalee Avenue and Mr Douglas, who was waiting for him, stepped up and fired ten bullets into his body.
Mr Douglas he said was in Eamon Rae's pub in Parkgate Street beforehand, but left suddenly to go to where Byrne was being driven to be ready for him, leaving a half-full drink behind him.
The prosecution also told the jury it would hear things Mr Douglas said and did after the murder that clearly indicate he was the person who shot Mr Byrne.
There would be a large number of witnesses, counsel said, the trial was like a jigsaw, which should fit together to complete the big picture and they would be satisfied Mr Douglas shot Mr Byrne.
