Preliminary results show that there was a 60% turnout in Libya’s first free national election in 60 years.
People in Tripoli took to the streets in celebration after the country's democratic poll.
However, one person was killed and two wounded in a gunbattle between security forces and anti-election protesters in the eastern city of Ajdabiya, according to the head of the election commission.
Nuri al-Abbar said the polling centre targeted by the protesters was later reopened and voting commenced normally.
Some protesters stormed polling stations and burned hundreds of ballot papers in the eastern city of Benghazi.
The city where last year's uprising began is now seeking more autonomy from the interim government.
Libyans were choosing a 200-member assembly that will elect a prime minister and cabinet, before laying the ground for full parliamentary elections next year under a new constitution.
Preliminary results are due to be announced on Monday or Tuesday, according to the electoral commission.
