An estate of 14 houses in Co Kerry has been sold at auction in Dublin for €235,000.

The property, situated on a 1.22 hectare site at Annagh Banks, Castlemaine, was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder.

It followed lengthy bidding at an auction of distressed properties at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin.

Underbidder Brendan Mannix, of Mannix Properties Services in Tralee, who was bidding on behalf of a client, said he was disappointed.

He said that he hoped the properties have been bought by a local purchaser who would finish and develop the site.

Planning permission had been previously granted for a 12 bedroom hotel, apartments and a restaurant on the site.

Meanwhile, a castle in Athy, Co Kildare, has been sold for €195,000 at the auction.

Whites Castle on the bank of the river Barrow in the centre of Athy, was bought by a bidder on behalf of a family from Galway who are currently living in the US.

The bidder said the family intended to restore the castle with a view to living in it eventually.

The castle which dates from the 15th century had a reserve price of €50,000.

A Georgian house in Merrion Square was bought by an anonymous bidder for €1,420,000.

Managing director of Allsop Space Stephen Mc Carthy, said most of the properties were being sold and the prices they were fetching were higher than he had expected.

Bidding on the Drinagh Court Hotel in Co Wexford, which was being sold by receivers, was interrupted by its former owner.

The former owner appealed to bidders to pull back.

He said that he had made attempts to buy back the hotel himself and wanted a chance to do so.

The hotel was sold to a bidder for €600,000.
