Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins has welcomed the fact that the Houses of the Oireachtas Service is to seek legal advice on the use of TDs' expenses.
The move follows on from his and Clare Daly's expense claims for attending anti-household charge meetings around the country.
Deputy Higgins told RTÉ News he believes it is entirely justified to use the travel allowances to assist such campaigns.
He said he will abide by any findings legal experts make but compared the annual allowance payment of €10 million made to big parties to the €120,000 for the Socialist Party.
Earlier, Ms Daly said that if anything inappropriate was done they would have no problem refunding the money.
However, she said the fact that legal advice is being sought shows there is a lack of clarity around the issue and they would be very happy to have those issues clarified.
People Before Profit TD Joan Collins said she did not “pocket the allowance" and if it is "clarified otherwise" she would repay the amounts utilised for travel.
