Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan to meet turf cutters

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan is to meet with turf cutters in Co Offaly on Thursday.

The meeting is an attempt to resolve issues surrounding compensation for some of the farmers worst affected by the ban on turf cutting.

Mr Deenihan said he was prepared to look again at areas where land owners claim the compensation offered to them is unfair even though they also own the freehold for the bog.

But the minister warned turf cutters who continue to break the law that there are huge implications for them not only before the courts but in the calculation of their EU single payment this year.

Mr Deenihan said that 30% of the protected bogs had already been irrevocably damaged and he warned turf cutters this could not continue.

He was speaking on a visit to Kilcormac in Co Offaly.
