Commission for Energy Regulation says hike in gas prices likely in the autumn

Gas customers look set to see an increase in their bills next autumn.

A spokesman for the Commission for Energy Regulation has said that a 10% rise is likely.

He said there is upward pressure on gas prices and that the exchange rate between the euro and sterling is a significant factor.

Around 93% of the gas used in Ireland comes from the UK.

Bord Gáis is due to make a submission to the commission shortly and the commission is due to publish its consultation paper in July.

Any price increase would come into effect on 1 October.

Although only Bord Gáis tariffs are still set by the regulator, other gas suppliers, such as the ESB and Airtricity, usually track them closely.
